FIA / 2026 Regulations

Time02:28

The Stewards remind all parties that this document carries no legal weight, moral authority, or basis in fact, and proceed as follows:

Fact F1 2026 Rules: FIA Admits It Couldn't Fix Its Own Regulations Sooner
Decision The FIA has confirmed, in an official statement that somehow required several paragraphs to say "we know, we're working on it," that Formula 1's 2026 technical regulations have caused more problems than the governing body was able to fix in real time — despite the governing body being the one who wrote them, tested them, approved them, and then watched them go wrong on live television in front of several hundred million people. The Stewards note that "we wrote the rules, saw them fail, and could not intervene sooner" is a genuinely remarkable sentence for a regulatory body to release with a straight face, and gently remind the FIA that authorship and oversight are traditionally considered related activities, not sequential ones.

The Stewards wish to clarify that none of this happened, and yet have still reached the following decision:

Fact McLaren declared “ready to challenge” Mercedes following its latest upgrade — a phrase nearly every team in the sport has used at some point about a car that then finished fifth
Decision The Stewards have reviewed the claim and can confirm that “ready to challenge” remains one of the least binding statements in professional sport, ranking somewhere between a New Year’s resolution and a wedding toast. McLaren is welcome to make the claim; the Stewards simply note that the last several teams to make it are currently unavailable for comment.

The Stewards met, deliberated at length, and ultimately agreed on nothing, before arriving at the following:

Fact Oliver Bearman admits Lewis Hamilton’s improved form at Ferrari has complicated his own hopes of one day landing a seat there
Decision The Stewards note that Bearman’s path to Maranello has narrowed considerably now that the seat he was patiently waiting to inherit is being actively used, and used well, by its current occupant. Ferrari is reminded that “seven-time world champion rediscovers form” is not typically filed under bad news, except, apparently, in the inbox of any young driver hoping otherwise.

The Stewards have considered the matter with the seriousness it does not deserve, and determine the following:

Fact Carlos Sainz reveals ambition to race the 24 Hours of Le Mans and potentially move into GT3 once his Formula 1 career ends
Decision The Stewards note that "retiring from Formula 1" and "immediately signing up for a 24-hour race" are not, by any reasonable definition, the actions of a man looking for more rest. Sainz is reminded that Le Mans does not award a podium for "seemed relaxed about it," and that GT3 machinery, while slower, is under no obligation to be any less exhausting at four in the morning.

Fact Red Bull confirms the hiring of Mercedes' junior talent scout, the same person credited with discovering championship leader Kimi Antonelli
Decision The Stewards note that talent scouts do not typically make headlines, and yet here we are. Mercedes is formally invited to reflect on the fact that discovering a future title contender and then losing the person who discovered him to a direct rival is, at best, an unconventional definition of "well managed." Red Bull has declined to comment beyond confirming the hire, which the Stewards interpret as a team that is extremely pleased with itself and doing an admirable job of pretending otherwise.

Fact Battery deployment data quietly removed from F1 broadcast graphics, with officials citing a lack of fan interest
Decision The number that used to explain why cars mysteriously slow down on the final lap has been ruled surplus to entertainment, and reclassified as "something only fourteen people were ever going to look at anyway."

Imola Contingency

The Stewards were unable to reach a real decision, so they reached a fictional one instead:

Season finale relocation to Imola in December raises conditions never covered by the Sporting Regulations
Fact Season finale relocation to Imola in December raises conditions never covered by the Sporting Regulations
Decision The Stewards find that a season concluding at Imola in December would expose competitors to circumstances including: ambient temperatures more associated with pre-season testing in Antarctica; Ferrari supporters remaining optimistic despite overwhelming historical evidence; mechanics attempting to fit tyre blankets to themselves; and broadcasters describing 4°C as "ideal racing conditions." No provision exists in the Sporting Code for fitting intermediate tyres to snow. Formula One Management is authorised to proceed with contingency planning. Complaints regarding weather must be submitted within 96 hours of the arrival of spring. No right of appeal exists, because everyone knows it would be funny.

Fact FIA-mandated 14-day shutdown catches several engineers audibly relaxing for the first time in 2026
